Our H-1 Binder solves many of today’s home building problems. As our natural resources become more precious, our landfills over flow, and plastics seem to be polluting nearly everything, we need to look at how we build differently. Can building be done with a carbon reducing footprint? Can my plastic consumption be less? Will a sustainable building last? The answers to all these questions is a resounding YES!
We, here at Lancaster Lime Works, are concerned about our environment. The third largest source of industrial air pollution: emitting carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxides, goes to the cement industry. While cement still remains a necessity, it’s use can be lessened.
The H-1 Binder is an All Purpose Binder. One Product, Many Uses!
What can you make out of one 50 pound bag of H-1 Binder?
- Add water to a milky consistency to make Limewash! Add pigments for your custom color.
- Add 300 pounds of concrete sand (with fines) to make an interior plaster or exterior stucco. You can custom pigment these applications as well.
- Add 150 pounds of Fine Marble Dust to create a fine white finish plaster.
- Add a 33 pound bale of hemp to make about 4.5 cubic feet of hempcrete using average compression. A higher compression will make a stronger block/infill.
Let’s consider home building in fire prone areas. Imagine a frame house with hemp block infill or shuttering. Hemp infill gives an R value of approximately 2.4 per inch. When mixed with hemp hurd it provides a self-healing, permeable and insulative result. Stucco the exterior with The H-1 Binder and sand. Mix the H-1 Binder with water to make limewash and add an extra layer of exterior protection. Plaster the interior directly over the hemp infill. Use fine marble dust as the aggregate to create your own specialty plaster. Roof with metal or slate. You have a home that is distinctly fire, insect, pest, mold and mildew resistant. And the H-1 Binder is carbon absorbing! Our H-1 Binder is a 100% carbonating lime. Normal moisture and humidity are beneficial to it’s longevity.
Managing Moisture and Water
Just like today’s modern products, water infiltration will cause failures. All homes need a positive slope away from the building, a sound roof, and gutters. Ensure that spouting is the correct size, with long leaders running away from the building. If your spouting goes into underground piping, make sure that the piping has no cracks and is not discharging copious amounts of roof water directly into your foundation. An inexpensive way to make sure the integrity of the piping is intact, is to have a company camara that underground rain leader.
Painting over the H-1 Binder using today’s modern “plastic” paints will trap water and cause the H-1 Binder to fail. Today’s paints will also trap water under the wood which produces rot. Make a Limewash or use Liquid Silicate Coatings as a permeable color option. These coatings can be tinted to many color options.
All ingredients for the H-1 Binder are exclusively produced and made in the United States, therefore eliminating all the fossil fuel consumption associated with importing.
